Grandpas paris

a modest tribute to a great man

Story by Markus Bjølgerud March 30th, 2015

The find

Some years ago we discovered several of grandpas old film negatives rolled tightly together in a old film roll case. We carefully unpacked and scanned them into my laptop. Some shots were all scratched up and unrecoverable due to the storing. But as most of the photos appeared, we were amazed by the quality of the shots. Not Vivian Maier great, but still.

The photos took us decades back in time into a post WWII Europe where my grandpa served in the Independent Norwegian Brigade Group in Germany.

While most of grandpas shots are from Norway, we’ve found several shots from a war thorn Germany and a roll from Paris. 10 colour exposures from Texas where also recovered. Some cities and locations are easy to identify, while others shots leave us without any clues. Thanks to Google Earth I’ve managed to track down some of the locations.

This winter grandpa died.

This is a modest tribute to a great man.

Last fall we took the kids on a road trip in France, landing in Paris, driving to Normandy, staying a couple of days in Saint Malo before returning to Paris. Great trip. The first set of shots is from this trip.

PARIS THE SEARCH

Packing for the trip I printed the Paris photos and stored them in my camera bag. Hitting the streets of Paris, chasing the locations where great fun, but to be honest, not quite compatible with a family vacation with a pair of short legs. The well-known location where sights the kids wanted to visit, the hunt was reduced to a game of real-time memory with a modest outcome.

Trying to memorize the objects hoping to catch some locations on the fly.

Notre Dame

Of course, the usual subjects where easy to locate. Looking back I should have cut of the white frames of the image. Love the picture from the terrace with the two boys. I would have loved to spend a night in Paris with them. The last shot i tried to fit into Notre Dame, thru the viewfiender it looked correct. It wasn´t.

HOTEL DE VILLE, a find & The EASY PICKS

The lines of the Hotel de Ville, the windows, the impossible shot. One step forward, one step left, elevate arm, rotate right. Arrgh. This one we never could align correct. Even the kido had a try without succeeding.
One of the few finds. Not Sherlock Holmes identifying the other locations, but still. I managed to align them OK.

UNTIL NEXt time

I´ve located the Girl in the Window, Moulin Rogue and some of the other locations. I´ll have to chase them down some other time. It´s been a fun project, but seeing some great picture-in-picture stories online I´m not quite satisfied.

Still, keeping grandpas photos and my story hidden away on my laptop is of no use, and if you´ve read this far I recon you might have enjoyed it.

Lets hope.

Paris

Well, since you’re already here I’ve added a couple of my shots from Paris. They might not stand the test of time, like my grandpas do. Thanks for reading (and sharing)
